Our Story

How We Met

Caleb and Kylie first crossed paths on a freshman camping and rafting trip organized through their university, an exclusive adventure for new students. The trip was an opportunity for students to meet other freshmen, and Kylie ended up in a van with an amazing group of soon-to-be friends: Damien, Zach, Taylor, Victoria, and, of course, Caleb.
During the trip, Caleb introduced himself as a game designer and tech enthusiast. His mention of Ubuntu sparked Kylie’s interest, leading to their first conversation about computers and gaming. Although Kylie was intrigued by Caleb, he was in a relationship at the time. Nonetheless, their friendship, along with the camaraderie of their rafting buddies, grew stronger. Becoming their core friend group freshman year.

How They Started Dating

By their sophomore year, both Caleb and Kylie had become single following challenging breakups. During this time, they grew closer through their shared interest and hobbies, such as hiking and anime. After a reflective camping trip with friends, Caleb realized that the qualities he valued in a partner—someone who was a good friend, virtuous, independent, fun, energetic, driven, and intelligent—perfectly described Kylie. This realization led to them dating, and after a few dates, Kylie invited Caleb to her brother’s send-off party. At this family gathering, Kylie’s mom introduced Caleb as Kylie's boyfriend. This marked the official start of their relationship on March 18, 2017.

7 Years of Dating

Their journey together saw many milestones. Kylie graduated from UAB in 2019 and moved to Connecticut to work at Yale, while Caleb moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for an internship at Google. Though they initially decided to break up due to the cross-country separation, this breakup lasted less than 12 hours. They quickly realized they were willing to navigate the challenges of a long-distance relationship.
Despite the hurdles of the COVID-19 pandemic, this period allowed Kylie to move back to Alabama and support Caleb as he completed his degree at UAB. After Caleb graduated in 2020, he accepted a full-time position at Google and relocated to Sunnyvale, California. Meanwhile, Kylie was accepted into a PhD program at UCSB in 2021, which brought her to California as well. Their long-distance relationship became easier, living in the same time zone and only a 4-hour drive away.
In 2023, Caleb transitioned to remote work and moved to Santa Barbara, ending 3.5 years of long-distance. This reunion made it clear to both Caleb and Kylie that they were meant to be together. They are thrilled to celebrate their journey and look forward to spending the rest of their lives together.

The Proposal

Caleb planned a surprise getaway weekend for him and Kylie in July 2024 to Big Sur. Caleb took Kylie on a walk down a trail they had been down during their first road trip through California in 2019. Caleb popped the question on a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean surrounded by beautiful flowers. Kylie, through tears, excitedly said yes! They celebrated that night over dinner with Caleb's two good friends, Benji and Chris, who helped to photograph the proposal.
